The Sierra de Bernia is a spectacular mountain range in the province of Alicante belonging to the Baetic mountains, and is accessible by road from the Jalon village, passing through the hamlet of Maserof, where restaurants and a wine museum can be found.
The mountain ridge extends about 11 km from West to East, perpendicular to the Mediterranean coast and is made up of around 1900 hectares, distributed between the municipalities of Alcalalí, Jalon, Benisa, Calpe, Altea, Callosa de Ensarriá and Tarbena. The highest peak of the Sierra de Bernia - which is used as a geodesic vertex - is located in the municipality of Jalon and stands 1128 meters above sea level.
Bernia is a reknown destination for nature lovers and hikers,visiting the ruins of the "Fort de Bernia " built in the year 1562, by order of Felipe II on the southern slope of the Sierra Bernia . The purpose of the building was, on the one hand, to prevent the revolt of the Moors and, on the other, to defend the coast of the frequent attacks from the Berber pirates.
From the remains of this fort, located at 803 metres, you can see the coastline between the Cabo de la Nao in Javea, and the port of Alicante and on a clear day, you can even glimpse the island of Ibiza.
Sierra Bernia offers a simple, back to nature way of life and spectacular views to go with it.
